Description
From one of Southeast Asia's most important rainforests to the world's largest volcanic lake, this journey brings together some of North Sumatra's most memorable nature and cultural experiences.
Begin in Bukit Lawang, gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park, with a two-day jungle trek and overnight camping experience. Trek alongside experienced guides in search of wild Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, monkeys, hornbills and other rainforest wildlife before returning to Bukit Lawang by tube raft.
Continue into the volcanic highlands of Berastagi, where you'll explore Karo villages, soak in natural hot springs and hike Mount Sibayak in time for sunrise.
The final part of the journey takes you past the spectacular Sipiso-Piso Waterfall to Lake Toba and Samosir Island. Spend two nights surrounded by mountain and lake views while learning about Batak history, architecture, weaving and traditions.

Daily Itinerary
Day 1 | Medan to Bukit Lawang
Arrive at Kualanamu International Airport, where your driver will meet you for the approximately four-hour journey to Bukit Lawang. Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring the riverside village at your own pace.
Day 2 | Jungle Trekking & Overnight Camping
After breakfast, meet your guide and begin your two-day trek into Gunung Leuser National Park, part of the UNESCO-listed Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.
Trek through the rainforest while learning about its plants and wildlife and keeping watch for Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, siamangs, monkeys, hornbills and other species.
After lunch in the jungle, continue to your campsite for an evening surrounded by rainforest. Dinner, camping equipment and hot drinks are provided.
Day 3 | Wildlife Trek & River Rafting
Wake up in the rainforest and enjoy breakfast at camp. Head out for another two to three hours of trekking in search of wildlife, or spend a more relaxed morning around the campsite and river.
After lunch, return to Bukit Lawang on a traditional tube rafting trip down the river. Check back into your hotel for the evening.
Day 4 | Berastagi & Karo Highlands
After breakfast, travel approximately 4.5 hours into the cool volcanic highlands surrounding Berastagi, stopping at scenic viewpoints along the way.
In the afternoon, explore the region with visits to the local fruit market, Lumbini Park, traditional Karo Batak houses and the natural hot springs at Sidebuk-debuk.
Spend the night in Berastagi.
Day 5 | Mount Sibayak Sunrise & Lake Toba
Start early for a guided sunrise hike up Mount Sibayak. After a short transfer to the trailhead, hike approximately one hour to the summit and watch the sun rise across the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Return to your hotel for breakfast before continuing towards Lake Toba. Stop at the dramatic 120-metre Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, with panoramic views towards the lake, before continuing to the ferry terminal.
Cross Lake Toba by ferry to Samosir Island and settle into your hotel for the evening.
Day 6 | Batak Culture on Samosir Island
Spend the day discovering the history and culture of Samosir Island. Visit the Siallagan Stone Chairs with a local guide, learn about traditional Ulos weaving, see distinctive Batak architecture, browse Tomok Market and visit historic royal tombs.
You'll also have the opportunity to see a traditional Sigale-gale puppet performance before returning to your hotel to relax beside Lake Toba.
Day 7 | Samosir Island to Medan
Enjoy your final breakfast overlooking Lake Toba before beginning the journey back to Medan.
Transfer to Kualanamu International Airport or your hotel in Medan according to your onward travel plans.
