Two of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, back to back, in one short and very early-rising trip.
Start with Mount Ijen, where you’ll hike in the dark to reach the crater in time to see its blue fire, a glowing flame from burning sulphur gas that you’ll find on very few volcanoes in the world. Stay for sunrise over Ijen’s turquoise crater lake and see the traditional sulphur miners who still carry loads up from the crater floor by hand.
Then head west to Mount Bromo, where an early start gets you to the rim for sunrise over the Bromo caldera. Look straight down into an active crater before crossing the vast volcanic plain known as the Sea of Sand.
Short on time but want to see East Java’s volcanic landscapes at their most dramatic? This private tour packs a lot into three days. Sleep is optional, but the views are worth it.
Daily Itinerary
Day 1 | Surabaya or Malang to Bondowoso
Your driver will pick you up in Surabaya or Malang for the journey to Bondowoso, where you’ll stop to rest before the night hike.
At 11:00 pm, continue to Paltuding, the starting point for the Ijen Crater hike.
Day 2 | Ijen Blue Fire Hike & Bromo Area
At 2:00 am, set off with your guide on the 3.3-kilometre trek to the summit of Mount Ijen. The first 900 metres are fairly flat and sandy, followed by a 1.2-kilometre uphill stretch that will get you sweating. The rest of the trail levels out again.
At the top, and with a bit of luck, you’ll see Ijen’s famous blue fire. Stay for sunrise and panoramic views over the turquoise crater lake, and watch the sulphur miners at work as they carry their loads from the crater floor back to Paltuding.
Hike back down to Paltuding, then travel on to the Bromo area.
Day 3 | Bromo Sunrise & Surabaya
Start at 4:00 am and hike up Mount Bromo to watch the sun rise over the Bromo caldera. From the top, you can look directly into the active crater.
Afterwards, head out across the Sea of Sand before returning to your hotel for breakfast and a shower.
Check out and transfer to Surabaya Airport.
